The Russian wind energy market has surpassed 1 GW

16 March 2021

Friedrich Ebert Stiftung and the World Wind Energy Association, in cooperation with the Russia Renewable Energy Development Association (RREDA), the Goal Number Seven Association, as well as governments of the Ulyanovsk and Astrakhan regions, published the report “Russia's Wind Energy Market: Potential for New Economy Development”. The author of the study is Tatiana Lanshina, Ph.D. in Economics, CEO of the Goal Number Seven Association, Senior Research Associate at RANEPA.

2020 can be considered the year of wind generation in Russia, when, despite the COVID-19 pandemic, it was possible to launch a large number of industrial wind power plants, and the installed wind power capacity has exceeded 1 GW. The main obstacle for wind power in Russia is the small domestic market, secured by a state support programme, due to the lack of a climate and environmental agenda in the country. The study pays significant attention to promising market niches for wind power in Russia, such as retail electricity markets in energy deficient areas. There is potential for the production of medium-capacity wind power plants to supply these markets and develop exports. Corporate demand for electricity from renewable energy sources is being formed in Russia. In addition, Russia has the potential to become a producer and exporter of renewable electricity, and other green commodities with a low carbon footprint.
